Fear vs Fear

Danny was doing homework when Fright knight came to him.

FK: I would like your permission to go out on a Quest.

DP: Why are you asking me?

FK: You are the Guardian of the portal, a keeper of balance, and may be the next ghost king. So i ask your leave.

DP: What is this quest?

FK: It has come to my attention that there is a energy entity out in the stars who claims to be the emotional embodiment of fear and is powering this "Sinestro Corps" to do heinious deeds in the name of fear and terror. I seek to eliminate this corps and give this "Parallax" a beating and a lesson in true fear.

DP: Parallax sounds like a pharmaceutical drug or a laxative.

FK: Fear work well as a laxative. Your friend Tucker knows this very well.

DP: I thought you were the embodiment of fear?

FK: I AM.

DP: OK permission uh granted i guess.

Fright Knight bows then turns to go but is interrupted.

DP: oh and Fright knight?

FK: Hmm?

DP: win.

FK: of course.

Im actually like in bed and going sleep after being awake for 24+ hours but here's something I worked on last night 🫶

I used my own version of Parallax of course because I adore her and I will be politely leaving her here and going to bed

I fully think the horror of Hal as Parallax tends to be misunderstood, or at best underestimated, by fans. Hal as Parallax is a doomsday type of event, he represents a paradigm shift both in universe and for readers alike.

For readers, he represents the painful truth that heroes are not perfect: they will waver, they will fail, and sometimes this will lead to them turning into what they once fought, or worse. Because Parallax Hal isn't just what he once fought, he is the twisted up-nightmare version of his enemies. He represents the tragedy of when "too much" effectively, undeniably, becomes "too much".

And in universe, he is a nightmare too. He's the definition of absolute worst case scenario. He's a wound that won't heal and instead keeps festering, keeps attracting more and more pain and it'll never go away. For heroes the paradigm shift comes in the form of watching one of their own fall so hard they cannot fight it. They struggle to see a way of winning against him. They are confronted by their failures, they are made aware of their weaknesses and blindness.

Hal turning into Parallax, betraying himself and everyone else close to him, is something deeply traumatizing for everyone. He murders. He murders those closest to him in such a personal, visceral way: with his own fists, with his own power. His hands kill Kilowog, Sinestro. Through his actions he destroys the Corps, leading to even more deaths.

Of course this level of betrayal is going to affect the way other heroes treat him. Hal turning into Parallax is THE reason for Bruce to come up with contigency plans in case someone else falls or turns evil. If Parallax hadn't happened, Bruce wouldn't have felt the need to come up with these plans (that is, until someone else close to him turned evil).

Parallax is meant to be the horror of a tragedy that could've been avoided. Parallax is the pain, the anguish, the trauma and the nightmare of someone who once represented the light turning into a twisted, angry and vengeful being that won't stop no matter what.
